Joy

Sleep was for the others,
Bound in warm first light.
Piercing pure surrender,
Wrapped in dregs of night.

Damp and curled and bursting,
Fingertips entwined.
You who grew so perfect
You who melted time.

Here you were like magic,
As if you’d always been
Never hesitating,
perfectly serene.

All the hurt and losses
Every searing pain,
For your tiny toenails,
All I’d do again.

We would gather wishes
Sent from far and near,
Gifts and cards so joyous
Grateful you were here.

You were every present,
Every birthday wish.
Joy, a million fireworks,
As your cheek was kissed.

I asked you, where you waited,
that decade patiently.
Atop a star, you told me
Watching your tv!
