Abstract Art
Controversial, empowering, and hugely influential to the present day, abstraction allows artists to explore new ways of expressing themselves without any ties to previous artistic traditions. The colors, shapes, and marks of Abstract Art provides an innovative visual language which allows Artists to communicate emotions, ideas, and experiences. With less of a focus on the subject of the artwork, experimenting with processes and materials with which abstract art is created, take on a much greater importance. Texture, depth and, particularly, color become vital tools in conveying the artist’s intention.

We looked at a few examples of abstract art and then painted several sheets of paper in thin layers of acrylic. Using a huge basket of found objects, art tools, everyday shapes such as tubes and sticks and stencils, each coloured sheet was printed, scratched, scribbled on, stamped, stencilled and treated to a mixture of marks and colours. Surprises were found with materials and methods, colour combinations and just how much fun it can be to get messy!

And a whole gallery of patterned sheets. Will you recognise yours next time?!!

Today was a riot of painting and experimenting with materials, techniques and colour. Pure play therapy! Next time, these collage papers will get pieced together, for the next stage of composition. However, a few Artists have already made a start on their abstract journey!
